Summary/Abstract: Acute toxicity bioassays are widely used in the biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems. An example of bioassay, conforming to OECD Guideline 202 and ISO 6341 is Daphtoxkit F magna. Crustaceans Daphnia magna are common in freshwater biocenoses, characterized by sensitivity to a wide range of environmental contamination and play an important role in food chain. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of Daphnia magna in the bioindication of cadmium compounds in the surface water. The results show high sensitivity of Daphnia magna to cadmium chloride (48h-LC50 = 0.77 mg/l). Values of lethal concentration indicate also the very high acute toxicity of cadmium chloride (48h-TU = 130.30). The results of the study pointed to the necessity of regular monitoring of cadmium compounds in aquatic ecosystems and the usefulness of Daphnia magna in their bioindication.
