Summary/Abstract: The development of rural areas, both in Poland and in Europe, is closely related to entrepreneurship, and implementation of innovative projects is considered an increasingly important component of the pro-development process. However, financial barriers limit such activity, which is why it is important to enable easy acquisition to funding for implementing innovative projects. The purpose of this article is to identify changes in the sources of funding innovative projects in enterprises in Poland. The data from the Central Statistical Office, including Local Data Bank and reports from companies’ statements for the period 2005–2016, were used to achieve the assumed objective. The research shows that enterprises financed expenditures from private as well as public funds. In the analysed period, an increase in the importance of high risk funds and interest in EU funds can be observed. The financing structure of innovative activities of entities from both the services sector and industry was dominated by own funds at the level exceeding 70%, followed by bank loans and funds obtained from abroad. The share of budget funds was the smallest.
