Summary/Abstract: Using a wide range of sources the article makes a comparative overview of the development of the complicated relations between Metropolitan Antim of Preslav and his disobedient subordinate clerics in the town of Shumen and the district of Shumen in the period from 1861 to 1868. These relations are important not only from the point of view of the Church and National Movement’s regional aspects but also in the context of its overall development. In addition, important features of the personality, behaviour and views of the renowned cleric who ascended the Exarch’s throne in 1872 are revealed as well.
