Summary/Abstract: This article examines the origin of the idea and the story of creation of one of the most famous lithographic works by the Bulgarian National Revival artist Nikolai Pavlovich. Its artistic analysis and all existing historical sources are a doubtless proof of Pavlovich’s socio-political motivation and inspiration to develop a theme of such a public importance as Antim’s I ascending on the Exarchic throne in 1870. The symbols and elements of allegory woven into the lithography „Pamyatnik“ are explicit evidence for the deep national feelings that inspired Pavlovich. The subtle artistic study of the work looks for the impact of the German pseudo-classicism as well as of the French romanticism in the person of its most eminent representative Eugene Delacroix. It also reveals the influence coming from the conservative preferences of the Bulgarian audience and especially from the Orthodox iconographic tradition. Even not succeeding to become more than an ordinary historical event illustration for the Bulgarians of the National Revival period the lithography „Pamyatnik“ remained as an apotheothis over the Greek clergy and triumph of the Bulgarian national spirit.
