Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman archives of the Oriental Department of the Sofia „St. St. Cyril and Methodius“ National Library contains about 1, 5 million archives pages. The „Belgrade“ fund has 2363 archives pages, which is 1164 archives units. According to those documents’ content six major sections can be distinguished: 1) economics; 2) politics; 3) law and administration; 4) education and culture; 5) military history and warfare; 6) religion – Christians and Moslems. The scientific communication gives examples from different chronological periods accompanied by short annotations and author’s comment. The Ottoman authorities paid special attention to fortresses, the one of Belgrade included. A great number of materials reveal their good military, administrative and architectural organization.
