Summary/Abstract: The article examines one of the numerous significant public acts of the eminent Bulgarian statesman, diplomat, business and public figure of Ivan Evstratiev Geshov – the establishment and consolidation of the Bulgarian Red Cross Organization (BRCO). He became its member from the mere moment of its foundation in 1885. In 1899 he was chosen for its chairman and he remains on this position for 25 years till his death. I. E. Geshov contributed in a great way for the building of BRCO in accordance with the international standards. It organized local subdivisions all around the country, established a hospital of its own as well as the first charity nurses’ institute in the Balkans. Being a chairman of the managing board Geshov took part in international Red Cross events thus gaining worldwide recognition for the BRCO. The material condition of the organization was also improved by Geshov’s personal donations. Under his guidance the Bulgarian Red Cross developed as a vital and efficient organization, particularly active during the wars. Geshov’s participation in international Red Cross forums continued in post-war times. In his last will and testament he left 100‑000 levs to the BRCO, with which a fund named after him was established – the „Geshov“ fund.
