Summary/Abstract: A prominent ideologist and leader of the Bulgarian National and Liberation movement, L. Karavelov paid special attention to the economic development of the Bulgarian lands. In a great number of articles in his newspapers „Svoboda“ (Freedom) and „Nezavisimost“ (Independence) on the basis of many facts and examples he analyzed the internal economic conditions in the 1870s. He criticized the economic policy of the Ottoman Empire whose feudal-bureaucratic governmental system impeded the Bulgarian industrial development and repeatedly emphasized on the fact that gaining national independence was the only possible way for economic advance. Karavelov did not examine the Bulgarian social and economical development in isolation, but mainly for the sake of emphasizing that the reason for the Bulgarian people’s difficult material position was the Ottoman feudal and political system. According to him any real economic progress and improvement of the material condition of the Bulgarian people were impossible without political liberation.
