Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss the interplay between economic inequality and social capital. In the analysis, social capital is investigated in disaggregation into cognitive, structural and behavioural dimensions. The feedback of the study discusses the process of structuralisation based on the nature of social ties (bonding versus bridging). The paper demonstrates that it is justified to claim that economic inequality has a negative influence on social capital, both in static and dynamic terms. However, the impact of social capital on income inequality has not been clearly determined – social capital may lead to an increase as well as to a decrease in income inequality. Such a correlation could be defined much better if empirical studies managed to isolate inequalities which are frustrating from those which are activating and to take into consideration the way these inequalities are perceived by individuals.
