Summary/Abstract: Do we have to convince that the sociology of literature exists? Sociologists who deal with literature professionally, often feel, say, obliged to explain themselves from the choice they make, as if the sociological study of literature was a kind of reason to accuse them of betrayal of their own discipline. They are struggling here not only with the lack of unambiguous methodology of the sociology of literature, but even with an indisputable definition of the area of its interest. In this article, conceived as a preliminary text to this volume, we are trying to consider briefly the causes of the uncertain status of the sociology of literature, and its history and future prospects.
