Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the characteristics of the modernist novel Jarani by SvetozarĆorović by studying its narrative position. The possibilities and limitations of an unreliable narrator make room for the modernization of procedures by merging“the neo-romantic decorative” and “the naturalistic critical” model. The discordantnature of a homodiegetic speaker has been explicated by the processing and interpretation perceived with the aim of building a socially engaged discourse that presents a critique of the patriarchal society. In this way, apart from the narrator’s will, the deviation from the procedure in the construction of standardized characters has been made. Furthermore, the intersection of disparate, but well-blended stylistic and poetic elements has been created resulting from the combination of the intentions of the narrator and the semantic potential that the story has opened (primarily owing to the personal involvement of the narrator). Thereby, a possibility for the development of (self-)irony, parody and carnivalization in the text has been given.
