Summary/Abstract: In this article the specific of interpretation of freedom as «freedom of choice» in the works of medieval scriber of Kyivan Rus metropolitan Ilarion. The assertion of own confessional identity, particular confessional nationalism by author is interpreted like higher representation of freedom of will. It is underlined that freedom idea in Ilarion has some aspects: state freedom, church freedom, religious freedom and personal freedom. Every aspect is realized according to outlook of author and epoch. It is accented that medieval symbolism combined objective distinctness, social dominated under individual. That is why the first was necessity of social, state and church freedom, than – individual, personal, which meant acceptance of Christianity at that time. In philosophy of ancient thinker Plato the harmony was created by Mind, Courage and Reasonableness, but in philosophy of Ilarion the harmony consists of Grace, Freedom of will and Conscience. It was a great step towards the medieval philosophy of Europe. And it was done by Ilarion – the Ruthenian thinker. Byzantium tradition the population of Christianity interpreted as Greek deal, but Ilarion underlined the importance of personal decision of Volodymyr. The work by Ilarion represents the realization of freedom of volition and freedom of choice in the Medieval epoch.
