Summary/Abstract: Saint Matthew’s account of the massacre of the children of Bethlehem by the vigilantes hired by Herod poses a lot of difficulty for interpreters. Some historians deny the historicity of the event on the strength of the fact that it was not recorded by Flavius Josephus. Whereas others assert that the massacre is a historical fact and that it was committed on the command of Herod famed for his many atrocities. The Biblical exegetes fall into two similar categories. Maria Valtorta, an Italian 20th century mystic, gives a very vivid account of this evangelical event, portraying it as a historical fact in her Poem of the Man-God. She even recounts the number the murdered infants: 32, including 6 baby girls who were unrecognized in the darkness of the night by Herod’s assassins.
