Summary/Abstract: Peace education is based on the general aim of enabling the child to develop as a social being through living and co-operating with others, thus contributing to the good of society. It is beneficial to all children in our schools irrespective of their identity, since all children need to learn how to live within and contribute to the evolution of our growing intercultural society. Peace education includes educational policies and practices aiming at responding to the different educational needs expressed by different cultural traditions. It defines educational policies and practices aiming at teaching individuals to live together, to know each other, their specific cultural and historical characteristics, with a view to favouring their integration based on values of tolerance and pluralism. It not only reflects society but also influences its development. While education cannot bear the sole responsibility for challenging racism and promoting intercultural competence, it has an important contribution to make in facilitating the development of the child’s intercultural skills, attitudes, values and knowledge.
