Summary/Abstract: Justice as fairness and the justice of self-respect are two fundamentally different conceptions of justice: while the former is grounded on the construction of the fundamental structure of modern society, the latter is grounded on the reconstruction of the basic anthropological relations and their historical dynamics. The paper compares the two conceptions by providing a methodological critique of the Rawlsian theory and presenting the theoretical foundations of the justice of self-respect. The paper argues that the theory and principles of the justice of self-respect open the path to a potentially new historical form of human coexistence, beyond recent modern society.
