Summary/Abstract: The author emphasizes the role which the town played in the socio-political and spiritual-cultural consolidation of the nation in particular state forms (Kievan Rus, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). She pays attention to the traditional national mentality of Belarusian and Ukrainian people connected with peasant civilization. Social processes and industrialization influence the form of urban themes and poetry.
