France and the Arab Spring

Summary/Abstract: North Africa and the Middle East constitute an important dimension of French foreign policy. Before following and assessing the French attitude towards the Arab Spring, one first has to get some insight into this policy. Its major feature embraces multifaceted relationships—political, historical, economic, cultural, linguistic and interpersonal—between France and Arab states. As many as eight out of the 22 member states of the Arab League are former colonies, overseas departments, protectorates or mandated territories of the French Republic.
