Summary/Abstract: The last large non-democratised region, the Arab world, is bound together by similar modern history (including its postcolonial legacy), socio-political problems and the Arab-Israel conflict. Over the last decade the United States, due to its dominant role in the international arena, had a unique opportunity to influence Middle Eastern developments, but its policy was built around a traditional 19th century model (where the sole actors in international relations are states, not societies) and instead of promoting stabilisation it actually led to stagnation. At the turn of 2010, that stagnation reached an apogee and bred rebellion in the Arab world.
