Summary/Abstract: The term “chalgia” has several meanings: ab old-urban music tradition from the second half of the XVIII century, with its peak in the XIX century, in urban areas now a part of the Republic of Macedonia; a music group of specific instruments (mostly consisting of, the oud, the canon, the tambourine, the violin, and the clarinet); and a specific music style. This kind of music transformed through the years due to changes in the context of nurturing musical traditions and everyday life changes in the said urban areas. Besides the sound transformations through the years, the most important thing is that the “chalgia” music survives until the present day through the new stylized orchestras and rare music groups which are trying to keep the authenticity of the sound alive.
