Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the sense of poetry in the creative work of Polish poet Zbignyev Herbert (1924–1998) and Belarusian poet Ihar Babkou (born in 1964). The analysis of Ihar Babkou’s reception of Zbignyev Herbert’s poetic form is undertaken. While examining the Belarusian tradition which perceives the goal of poetry as the service to people, Ihar Babkou argues that civil poetry in Belarus is dead and metaphysical one has never been born.
