Summary/Abstract: This is a review of the „World Encyclopedia of Religious Film”, published in Polish in 2007 by the “Biały Kruk” publishing house. The book was edited by Father Marek Lis and Adam Garbicz, who managed to gain the cooperation and submissions from 40 different authors from all corners of the world. The virtue of this book lies in its span – the authors describe films, artists and problems related not only to Christianity, but also Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. The encyclopedia, consisting of 1700 entries, not only provides detailed descriptions of the most important films that are either religious, or exploring the sphere of human spirituality, but also excellent entries on topics such as for example “Portrayals of Jesus in film”, “Israeli biblical films”, or “Evil in film”. The author points to the excellent and well justified choice of films considered in the encyclopedia. He also argues that the encyclopedia might prove not only an excellent study aid for experts and students in film studies, but also a guide across the world of cinema spirituality for all cinema goers.
