Summary/Abstract: Ioan Alexandru was born in the night of December 25th 1941. He would have turned 70 last Christmas. He was born in an important night, of great joy for the humankind, when the Son of God was born as the Son of Man. He was not only one of the greatest Romanian poets of his generation, but of all times, especially in his volumes Vămile Pustiei—The Limbs of the Desert and Imnele Bucuriei— The Hymns of Joy. He was also one of the bravest and most perseverant Christians to declare his faith among his fellow infl uential intellectuals during the harsh communist regime. None of them displayed such an intense and beautiful patriotism as he did. The author mentions certain aspects of the poet’s life that he witnessed, mostly the academic courses he attended, when Ioan Alexandru talked about and spread faith. There were three major hypostases of Ioan Alexandru’s personality that had an important role in the spiritual life of the Romanian society: he was a poet, a prophet, and a teacher. The most important of all was the Poet. His lines are quoted in this evocation. Unfortunately, Ioan Alexandru’s poetry is not as well situated today as it should be due to its value and due to the author’s role in the context of repressing any public expression of our Church during the communist regime. Ioan Alexandru was a man blessed by God with precious gifts which he used with abnegation.
