Summary/Abstract: The present article investigates one of universal literature’s most prolific motifs: the island. This particular motif goes beyond the boundaries of literature and becomes a subject of interest for several areas and disciplines: philosophy, anthropology, biogeography, mythology, psychoanalysis. In the context of the contemporary world, a new discipline devloped, “the nissology”, which deals with the study of the islands “in their own terms”.
