Summary/Abstract: Following the 200th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Hungarian writer and poet Arany Janos, this work provides an abstract review of the poet’s reception among the Serbian literature – starting from the 1860s up until World War I. Additionally, this thesis focuses on the circumstances that benefited the popularity of his works, alongside the outstanding translation work of Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, who helped to bring Arany’s works closer to the Serbian literary community. Furthermore, the pronounced relationship between author and translator is explo red, with the unbalanced flow of reception starting with the translation of Arany’s Toldi by Zmaj (year 1858) , which was extremely well received by readers, up until Arany’s works started to fade into oblivion at the beginning of the 20th century, that followed just a few years the publication of the Toldi Trilogy (year 1910).
