Potential for development of automotive clusters in special economic zones illustrated by the example of the Wałbrzych and Legnica zones

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present prospects for development of the automotive bunch (cluster) in the impact areas of the Wałbrzych and Legnica special economic zones (SEZ-s). It is in this article that the hypothesis of the existence of the development potential for the automotive cluster and the important role of the zones in the automotive sector development in the Lower Silesia region was assumed. In order to verify the assumptions used, the method of analysis of documentation, GUS data and data obtained from the companies managing the zones and the method of interviews conducted with representatives of the management companies were applied. In the first part of the article, the essence of the concept of bunches and the special economic zones was explained. Then the history and the present situation of the automotive industry in the Lower Silesia region as well as effects of functioning of the selected zones were presented. At the end, the conclusions on the existence of conditions for the development of the automotive cluster in the analyzed region and the role of the economic zones in the development process of clusters of automotive companies were presented.
