Summary/Abstract: For a long time, there was a recognition of the common responsibility that preceded individual responsibility. In chapter 18 of the book of Ezekiel, the prophet, in the time of slavery, emphasizes individual responsibility, because the community was broken. To demonstrate this, the author of this article quotes the ancient texts of the Pentateuch testifying that both responsibilities existed since the origin of the Elected People. The joint responsibility of the Alliance and the community of Israel was based on the individual responsibility of each member of that community. The sense of responsibility guaranteed fidelity to God and His covenant. This responsibility depended on the fate of Israel.
