Summary/Abstract: One of the most frequently used techniques in risk analyses is fault tree modelling. A fault tree analysis(FTA) can be used to identify the subsystems that are most critical for the operation of a given system, or to analyse how undesirable events occur. This paper describes the design of an fault tree analysis with top event defined as ‘loss of propulsion for a ship’ followed by quantitative and qualitative approach using algorithms and methods shown in the paper (as example, the algorithm called MOCUS –Method of Obtaining Cut Sets or „Vessley-Fussell” measure of importance that can be applied on fault trees).
