Summary/Abstract: The principle that the end justifies the means has not met with the approval of pedagogicalcircles for centuries. This issue is touched in the popular form by a contemporary American writer Suzanne Evans in her book entitled ‘Machiavelli for Moms’. It should be emphasized that the Renaissance writer, while proposing the ruler to apply the rule the end justifies the means, restricted it exclusivelyto the sphere of politics. The well-known Renaissance writer, historian and philosopher never praised the work entitled ‘The Prince’. In spite of this, Machiavellianism has become popular in management sciences and is discussed in the context of lobbying and marketing topics. It is not, however, justified in pedagogy. Not because the famous thinker Jean Jacques Rousseau considered ‘The Prince’a satirical work. It turns out that honesty and straight forwardness in upbringing are still the foundation of good and effective upbringing. The first part of the article discusses the main ideas contained in‘The Prince’, while the second one refers to the issue of lying in the perspective of family and upbringing. It shows that the end does not justify the means in upbringing.
