Functioning of the Family of a Child with a Disability

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to characterize the functioning of a family with a child with a disability in the psycho-social dimension and to show the role of healthy siblings in the process of itssocialization and upbringing. The first part of the article presents typical reactions of parents, which appear after the birth of a disabled child and shows characteristic parental attitudes. In the second part,reference was made to the results of the survey, which were conducted in a group of 265 respondents-parents of children with disabilities. The aim of the research was to obtain opinions of parents on how the disability of their child affects their family relationships, relationships with the spouse and the social environment. An important aspect was to examine what is the role of healthy siblings in raising a disabled child in the family.
