Summary/Abstract: The article dwells on the contemporary state of art in holy shrines and pilgrimage studies. The author examines the main theoretical approaches developed by Bulgarian and Western academic traditions. She argues that the dominant western tradition is centered mainly on Catholic pilgrimages, therefore the widely accepted terminology cannot explain in an adequate way the events and processes related to Bulgarian (Balkan) pilgrimages. Several working hypotheses are offered.
