Summary/Abstract: Cătălin Dorian Florescu, the writer born in Timişoara and settled in Switzerland describes in this fragment from his multiple-prized novel, "A Time for Wonders", the experience of being a child in communist Romania, where every family dreamt of a better life, in a better realm of wonders. The typical means of entertainment available to the impoverished common family are faithfully rendered by the young author. The second part of the fragment translated by Adriana Rotaru takes the story of the family to a completely different territory: Italy, Rome. The writer's eye is keen on details, both with regard to human beings and to their surrounding objects and places. Emotions and states of mind are rendered by means of silent observation and interpretation of gestures. The atmosphere of the two regimes experienced by the Romanian family is comparatively and scrupulosuly described.
