Summary/Abstract: What are the most significant changes that have occurred inthe field of signed language interpretation over the past half century? In the form of a personal and professional memoir, a pioneer in the field argues that one change, what he calls the Great Paradigm Shift, is far more fundamental than any others. Citing historical milestones, he defines the interlingual/intercultural model in contrast with the medical/rehabilitation model and shows how that paradigm shift reshaped not only the practice of signed language interpretation, but also research and training.
