Summary/Abstract: The article based on the archival material kept in the National Archives in Pazin looks at the extent of the shipbuilding in Rovinj. The development of the shipbuilding industry in Rovinj was in rise from the middle of the second to the middle of the third decade of the nineteenth century. In the difficult times that followed the Napoleonic wars, lot of the ships were stolen, destroyed or submerged. In this situation, a large number of traders and fishermen decided to build new boats in the naval shipyards of Rovinj. Only between 1809 and 1823, 277 vessels were built in the naval shipyards. Out of that number, 122 were ordered by residents of the city, while 155 were built for foreign buyers. As the shipowners in Rovinj were known for their quality of construction, orders came apart from Istria, also from Dalmatia and the Austrian coast. Most often, in Rovinj, were built small ships called bracera, and beside them pieleghi and larger ships. Only the best quality oak, larch and beech were used for the construction, and were purchased from the interior of Istria. During this period, they did not build ships in Rovinj, according to theoretical principles, but on practical principles, because there was no shipbuilding school in Rovinj.
