Summary/Abstract: Collage is a technique highly used by the Goncourt brothers. It reveals how these writers were painters and historians before becoming novelists. Collage is not only linked to a pictorial usage but also to a historical one. Writers associate it with the “human document” to reproduce reality within the constraint of truth. This device generates a hybridity in the text itself. The collage also allows through this hybridity an overview on the preliminary work of novelists and on the manufacture of the oeuvre before its realization.
