Summary/Abstract: The atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army following their capture of the Chinese city of Nanking in 1937, was, and remains, a controversial subject. Looking at the topic and where it fits in the historiography of atrocities, massacres and genocide, has been, and continues to be, largely an exercise in perspective. The internal political perspectives within China and Japan, and also with the larger world, has often been more of a guide to how people write about this topic than any other factor.
