Summary/Abstract: Even though the Republic of Macedonia as a candidate country for membership in the EU does not have quantified obligations in the field of energy, it should make efforts and have a more organized approach towards providing energy from renewable energy sources (RES) to the amount of 20% from the final energy consumption, which is one of the EU obligations that need to be implemented by 2020. Therefore, the issue elaborated in this paper is quite specific, important up to date as it covers RES, and in this context the research is mainly based on carefully selected and practically processed data regarding the final energy consumption, including the share of RES in this consumption, which has a direct impact on the share of final energy consumption in the European Union and the Republic of Macedonia. In the same frames, further in the text special attention is paid to electricity trading and as an integral part the net import and its share in the final electricity consumption. This topic is very important from an economic perspective because the utilization of RES and investing in it influences the growing electricity production and contributes to the reduction of import dependency, i.e. the economic development of the country in general.
