Literature and Memory in Utunk Journal

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the relation between literature and memory during the fi rst period of Romanian socialism. I chose as the subject of my research the first 15 years of Utunk, a literary journal from Cluj-Napoca. As the ideology of socialism spread, public sphere was restricted step by step by the institute of cenzorship, of propaganda. The instrumentalization of literature in order to serve the purposes of the Party affects the way the past can or cannot appear in the public sphere of this period.
