BRIEF HISTORICAL MILESTONES ON THE EVOLUTION OF UAV SYSTEMS: THE BEGGININGS –1914

Summary/Abstract: In the context of current challenges, there is a growing interest in society for the construction and use of UAVs, both for military and civilian purposes. This article is the first of a series of articles to be published, detailing the evolution of UAV systems over time. The last two decades have seen an exponential growth in the development and use of unmanned systems, anticipating what can be seen as the greatest change of paradigm in the evolution of mankind. Military UAVs have forever changed warfare, providing permanent airborne surveillance, increased command and control capabilities, and high-precision capability without loss of human crew. Civil AAVs are already a permanent component in commercial, industrial, entertainment, emergency services. Contrary to popular opinion, however, interest in UAV dates back long before most people realize, because many states have hired unmanned military systems more than a century ago.
