Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to analyse the qualities and genre of the most popular Polish soap operas and to demonstrate that labelling them as telenovelas is not correct. The incorrect taxonomy results mainly (but not exclusively) from the impurity of genre, which is rather a rule than an exception in TV productions, and from problems with determination of genres. Using selected examples, I will demonstrate how the Polish soap operas have changed in this century. These changes, related, inter alia, with the introduction of new plots and characters, are a consequence of the broadcasters' and show creators' desire to keep ratings as high as possible.
