Summary/Abstract: There has been an increasing attention oriented towards the institutions of financialcapitalism in the recent years. This piece focuses on a specific type of scholarlyperspective – that of ethnographic studies of the financial sphere – analyzing themechanisms leading to the crisis of neoliberal capitalism. With the parallel reviewof three key monographs in this field – Fool’s Gold by Gillian Tett, Out of the Pits byCaitlin Zaloom and Liquidated by Karen Ho – I will show both the potentials inherentin applying anthropological methods and theories in the inquiry of „the financial”, andthe possible drawback of such an analysis. All in all, the anthropological gaze orientedtoward the power mechanisms and ideological work which play out in the everydaynessof constituting the financial sphere could provide a more sophisticated critique ofcontemporary neoliberal global capitalism.
