Summary/Abstract: The Public opinion, democracy, and market reform in Africa is based on a research among over eighteen years old citizens in twelve African countries. It describes the inhabitants’ opinion about the political and economic system. The conclusion of the authors, Bratton, Mattes and Gyimah-Boadi is that the citizens mostly support democracy. However, there is just a minority of the society that can be described as „committed democrats”. In general the people are less satisfi ed with the economic than the political systems. The authors not only present their fi ndings, but also review the theoretical backgrounds and they testify these approaches by the help of the data of the research. In contrast with the anthropological and historical approaches that emphasize the importance of the structure of the society and the cultural values, the authors consider the knowledge and the experience of the individuals even more important.
