Summary/Abstract: What meant and especially what means the participation of a country in an international exhibition? The answer could be a real compendium of problems pertaining to the relation national versus international, in times of great social-political unrest or of important renewal of thinking. The present paper draws the attention to a frequent phenomenon during the inter-war period, the Universal Exhibition. At a first glimpse, this appears to be a trend, a summum of pleasures with fireworks, funfairs and fascinating gardens. But it is a social, spiritual and political expression of that epoch, becoming rather a specific institution. The paper entitled Romania at the International Exhibition of Barcelona, 1929, taking into account the complex problems related to creating/changing the image of a country abroad. We can consider that the works related to the organization of the Romanian pavilion also influenced the discussions on the integration of the peasant culture into the cultural strategies in order to create a new image of Romania during the inter-war period. Our research demonstrated the frequent use of such actions. Interdisciplinarity and the use of any scientific approach, facilitate the gathering of useful data for both ethnology and history. It is also a stimulus to use a new way of reading a text, trying to understand a historical or ethnological (ethnographical) document using its parahistorical significance, which exceeded the limits of the domain it belongs to.
