Summary/Abstract: The paper considers ethnic classification as a social construction and sets out to analyze the related problems and difficulties. It takes as its starting point the changing categories affected by globalization, but at the same time it points to the intrinsic problems of classification present in any era. The significance of the concepts creating and (supposedly) separating groups is to gain and to deny access to social resources. In order to achieve this, the otherwise unidentifiable common features of groups have to be identified administratively. Ethnic categories created this way start to assume a number of additional meanings. They show how a certain group wants to see itself and how others want to see them. Expressions connected to these concepts start to have different values, often discriminately. But rejecting them also raises a dilemma since they can become part of the groups’ identity. Similarly, new categories may bring a promising fresh start or a new ghettoization.
