Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the adequacy of transfer of the Kazakh realia on the basis of the Russian translations of Dukenbai Doszhan’s stories “Blue Mirages of Kulanchi” (Құланшыда қалған іс), “Lion’s Hair Wind” (Арыстанды-Қарабастың желі), and “A Woman and Four Headmen” (Төрт патшаны көрген кейуана). The purpose of the paper is to reveal the general patterns of using the most and least frequent means for translating national realia in the studied Kazakh works into the Russian language. The analysis allowed to determine the degree of coincidence of the linguistic worldviews, on the one hand, as presented by the author, and, on the other hand, as reconstructed by the translator. A generalized description of the translations of national-specific lexemes has been given. Successful and unsuccessful strategies have been identified. Examples from the works have been provided. Particular attention has been paid to one of the most important issues in the practice of translation, i.e., to the transfer of the national spirit. As a result of the analysis, it has been revealed that transliteration and description are the most frequent methods when translating lexical units denoting various ethnographic realia. Approximate and contextual translations are used to render words that describe complex realia, bearing the semantic load and created with the help of language games and allusions.
