Linguistic Issues in the Synodal Documents of the 9th–10th с.

Summary/Abstract: The paper traces out the problem of the vernacular languages used as liturgical by the Latin church during the Middle Ages – as treated by the synods and papal decrees. After the transition from Greek to Latin in the celebration of the Roman liturgy, a sophisticated and especially stylised language medium of worship was elaborated. In the course of the Middle Ages, Latin as the language of the liturgy became more and more removed from the language of the people, especially because of the formation of national languages and cultures in Europe. The Byzantine mission in Great Moravia proposes a solution for the already Christianized areas of the Western Slavs to replace the Latin language as liturgical with Slavic. The idea of divine worship is essentially a proclamation of Word of God and therefore using a language that was not intelligible to the assembly was contrary to the Gospel, was attacked by not a few councils of the Roman church. The capitularies of the Carolingian courts, the synodal protocols from the local and the imperial councils are interpreted in the prospect of the Cyrillo-Methodian topic and special attention to the councils held in Spalatum/Split.
