Summary/Abstract: This paper provides a detailed analysis of five historical items from the times of Jan III Sobieski concerning his role in the battle of Vienna, which are in part entirely unknown to Polish readers. The author has pointed out that the portrait of Sobieski displayed on the obverse side of the medallic work harked back to the images of ancient personages from the Roman times and was made on the basis of graphics portraying the king. Also, the royal titles inscribed in the edge lettering of the obverse side appeared earlier in the European medallic art.
