Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the image of the city in Balkan cultures in thematic, comparative, historical, structural and semiotic aspects. The city is seen as a common topic, cross-point and cultural topos in Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek and Turkish literatures. The discussion is based on the genre specifics of the novel and travelogue, and on the themes (related to history and civilization) of the city as a topos, symbol and motif in different texts from Balkan literatures, with a particular focus on Bulgarian literature. The present discussion is theoretically grounded in the works of Ernest Renan, Fernand Braudel, Italo Calvino, Bozidar Jezernik, V. Galsworthy and Pierre Nora.
