Summary/Abstract: The article researches the complicated phenomenon of interrelation of religion and culture based on relation of Lutheranism to the cult images. Examining the attitude of leading theoretic researchers of Lutheranism towards icons, the author makes a conclusion about the contradiction and changeability, that further influenced the development of both the European icon-painting and painting of secular subject.
