Summary/Abstract: In the article are examined the modes of human existence: pessimism and optimism; are specified their qualities and dynamics in modern society. The above categories reflect destructive and constructive ways of perception of the world, outlooks and indicate not only constructive mood of a person but also his/her inveterate stand in life which is formed according to the personal choice: to live and realize one's mental forces and resources to the limit or to be an opponent to the world in despair and live in an exploitative manner. This problem is examined in terms of Erich Fromm's psychoanalytical theory and the attention is paid to the priority and possibility of optimism by example of the life experience of the philosopher.
