Port City in the Development Process. The Construction of LNG Terminal

Summary/Abstract: The theoretical part of the article attempts to summarize the history of theoretical conceptualization of term “port city” in maritime sociology. In the empirical part author focuses on the problems of local community responses to the challenges of urban development and the construction of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście (Poland). The case study included results of interview questionnaire (N=204), technique of the participant observation, and an analysis of official documents and local newspapers articles "Wyspiarz Niebieski " and "Nowy Wyspiarz”. Research indicates that the city - despite its potential attractiveness of investment - is in crisis and decline in economic and social activity. However, inhabitants are convinced that local community should seize the opportunity offered by a development of gas terminal.
