Summary/Abstract: The text deals with a specific aspect of the anti-western propaganda in the communist People’s Republic of Bulgaria - the representation of the Western city. The circulation, impact, and conceptual content of political clichés are traced by means of the way the Western city was reflected in the totalitarian Bulgarian press. Occidentalism was a means in the diplomatic relations (a guarantee of loyalty to the USSR), but also an attempt at potential ideological unification in an internal political plan around the construction of an enemy. The analysis focuses on the 60s of the 20th century, since at that time the relationships between the two blocs underwent a positive development. While the pragmatic interests called for an improvement in the relationships, propaganda tenaciously continued to create a negative image of the West.
